Lemon and Grey May 20, 2012

Filed under: Cake Decorating — thehobbyholic @ 4:33 pm

I hosted a baby shower for a friend yesterday and the theme was yellow and grey with elephants. I saw a cake online that gave me a great idea for the cake.

Lemon cake with lemon curd filling and lemon buttercream frosting. Covered in fondant with a gum paste peony on top. My first peony and I have to say, it came out well. I’ll definitely be making more of these.

Billowing cake April 25, 2012

I discovered a technique in cake decorating called billowing. It reminds me of fabric, so naturally I had to give it a go. I also tried out a new gum paste flower. Loved the final results.

Keeping with the cake theme, I have continued working on gum paste flowers. This time something a little more realistic. I made this one a few days ago.

Chocolate Chocolate Cake April 11, 2012

Filed under: Cake Decorating — thehobbyholic @ 10:44 pm

This last weekend I made a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and chocolate shards surrounding the cake. I had seen a tutorial on how to make the chocolate shards from transfer sheets and thought I’d give it a go.

It was a great success. I learned a few things that I’ll have to improve on for the next time but there will definitely be a next time!

Gum Paste April 5, 2012

Filed under: Cake Decorating — thehobbyholic @ 4:57 pm

I have been dabbling in fondant and gum paste more. This is my first gumpaste flower. I’m not head over heals about it, but I have to start somewhere. I found a tutorial online that I followed.

The second one was better

So I got adventurous and hand cut a sunflower.

This was my favorite by far. I think I’ll make a few more and make a cake to go with.

Baby Shower Cake March 19, 2012

A week and a half ago I made a cake for a friend’s baby shower. It has been on my “to-do” list for a while. I LOVE the technique and enjoyed making it.

Fondant Class March 18, 2012

Filed under: Cake Decorating — thehobbyholic @ 2:25 pm

Two months ago I took my first advanced fondant class. I brought my cake and some of the basic supplies but was lacking in a few key fondant supplies. I argued that I wasn’t given a supply list! Anyway, everyone in the class was very helpful and filled in where my supplies left off. And now they joke about showing up to class with only a cake and going home with a fully decorated cake. Making new friends can be fun. :)

Here is my yarn basket cake.

Topsy Turvy Cake March 17, 2012

Filed under: Cake Decorating — thehobbyholic @ 10:25 pm

I took a fondant cake decorating class today. It is they advanced project class. We work on a specific cake or technique each time. If there is something we really want to try out or learn then they schedule it for a class. I asked to learn how to make a Topsy Turvy Cake. I’ve always thought they were fun to look at and had no idea how they are made. LOVED it. Learned so much.

I am apart of a MOPS group near me. We are always looking for fundraising ideas and so I thought I’d do a cake decorating class. Right up my alley and a number of people have shown interest. I’m very excited. This is the cake we will be making. (Of course, I had to make a sample!)
